Even a decade ago, Bangladesh did not have a significant contribution in the world market in the home textile sector. Gradually, the export pattern of Bangladesh’s home textile sector changed drastically. And now the name of Bangladesh has been associated with China, India, Pakistan. There is a huge demand for home textile products in the European market. As a result, the export of home textile products in Bangladesh has increased. According to the Bangladesh Terry Towel and Linen Manufacturers and Exporters Association and the Export Promotion Bureau, home textile export earnings were only 155 million USD in FY 2004-05 and increased to 788.76 million USD in FY 2010-11. In the 2012-13 fiscal year, home textile exports amounted to 791.52 million USD, decreases 12.64 percent from the previous fiscal year and in 2014-15 fiscal year, export earnings increased to 804.34 million USD. In the 2016-17 financial year, the export income from home textiles came to 799.14 million USD. Then In 2018-19 financial year, the sector exported goods worth $851.72 million, but in the fiscal year 2019-20, due to the outbreak of Covid-19, the export income of this sector decreased to $758.91 million. But in the just-concluded fiscal year (2020-21), the home textile sector broke all the previous records and earned $1132.03 million, which is 49.18% more than the previous fiscal year.
The Position of the Rival Countries of Bangladesh
In the home textile sector, China, Pakistan, India and Turkey are the main competitors of Bangladesh and Bangladesh ranks 5th. Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia or other manufacturers have not yet reached the level of Bangladesh, but their export earnings are significant. According to the European Apparel and Textile Confederation, in 2016, home textiles worth $ 26.86 billion were imported from outside the European Union, with China accounting for 33%, Pakistan 25%, India 16%, Turkey 11% and Bangladesh 7-8%. According to the South China Morning Post and the China Home Textile Association, China now exports about $18 billion worth of home textiles worldwide, and they expect this amount to increase to $32 billion in the next four years. Pakistan already tops the home textile sector compared to Bangladesh due to its own cotton and GSP + facilities. According to hometextiletoday.com, technological advances in the sector in 2016-17 boosted the country’s export earnings to $6.2 billion. The Turkish home textile industry is the fourth largest exporter in the world, according to the Turkish Ministry of Economy at the end of 2017 exports of Turkish home textile products reached 3.6 billion US dollars. Every year, Turkey organizes home textile trade fairs called Evatex and Hometex to accelerate its business.
Possibilities and Limitations of Home Textiles in Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s home textile sector has huge potential, with a record export in the last financial year. There is no doubt that if more and more work is done in this sector and investments are made in this sector, then there will be a lot of growth from this sector. However, at present Bangladesh is considered to have the most sustainable environment for manufacturing textile products and the textile factories are working to produce good quality products through sustainable practices, which are preferred by foreign buyers, and are interested in importing more products from Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, in the context of Bangladesh the entrepreneurs said that the price and supply of cotton is the biggest problem for the home textile sector. In this respect, Bangladesh lags far behind China, India and Pakistan. Because they can control 40-50 percent of the production cost, due to their own cotton supply. On the other hand, Bangladesh has to depend on the fluctuating price of cotton in the world market. To meet the demand for cotton, Bangladesh has to import cotton about 98 percent of total required cotton.
Technological innovations have improved their durability and transformed conventional household textiles into high-performance textiles by adding multiple functionalities, allowing them to follow the trend consistent with electronic textiles, integrating technology into durable materials for easy disposal and reuse. At present the demand for home textiles has increased a lot and this sector is continuing its strong growth in Bangladesh. During the Corona epidemic, where RMG exports declined, home textile exports rose 49 percent in the last fiscal year, and factory owners expect further growth. Bangladesh home textile market has already attracted some of the most emerging foreign companies. Bangladesh’s major home textile importers are IKEA, Carrefour, Asda, Littlewood, Maurice Phillips, Wal-Mart and Redcats. Most of the bed linen, bath linen and kitchen linen products are imported from Bangladesh. However, the competing countries of Bangladesh are China, India and Pakistan. Therefore, Bangladesh should focus on high value items, expand the field of home textile production and work with new technologies to overcome the limitations of home textiles as well as initiatives and government initiatives.
